What do you do when you have a few extra days to spare? You hop on a plane, that’s what.
And that is exactly what Erika and I did. All of our roommates jetted off somewhere different for our final fall break. Us? We chose Colorado (cheap plane tickets, HELLO).
So with our snacks and books in tow, we set off to good ole Colorado. I don’t know if you can tell, but we have an Elementary teacher in training here.
We arrived rather late and absolutely passed out until our bright and early wake up call the next morning.
Let me tell ya, it was a process trying to decide where we wanted to hike. All of the mountains and ‘easy’ hikes put all the Minnesota hikes to shame. But somehow, we ended up on Mount Sanitas in Boulder, which was about a 3.5 mile loop.
The hike itself wasn’t incredibly strenuous, the beginning was more stair climbing than anything else.
More towards the top, there were several false-peaks, that allowed for some pretty spectacular vantage points. Here specifically, we were admiring Bear mountain.
The wild thing for us Minnesotans was the weather. You’d think that the snow would mean it was cold, but really it was like 50 degrees (Fahrenheit). So clearly, we were absolutely sweltering at different points in the hike.
Pretty incredible to be able to hike in the snow AND in 50 degrees, let me tell ya. Colorado knows how to do it, Minnesota, take notes.
Eventually, we made it to the top and absolutely had to touch the post. I mean if you don’t, did you even climb a mountain?
Commence the obligatory ‘we reached the top, can you even believe it?’ pictures.
Here’s the deal, this is how you know you’ve got good hiking shoes… He was like this for several minutes before moving (we told him, he just didn’t care).
This particular hike, you have the option of going up and down the mountain on the same route or going up one side and down the other. We opted for the latter option. Boy did we not realize what this would look like.
Good thing was, there were places to take a chance to peak at Boulder down below and to see Bear Mountain again. P.S. we obviously know what we’re doing with the whole ‘finger on top of the mountain picture).
Eventually, despite a few close calls and going through several heat waves, we made it down.
Sweaty, hungry, and ready for a nap, we headed over to Pearl St. to grab some lunch and shop around. We ended up at Lindsey’s Deli shop on Pearl and it was fantastic post-hike.
After that, we just meandered around the CSU Boulder campus, before making our way to Breckinridge later that night.
Thoughts on Boulder? I now see the appeal of why so many friends ended up at CSU Boulder. Absolutely will be back for more time here, a day was just not enough.
Wait til you see what we did (and ate) in Breckinridge.
Til then,
Katelyn
